Timing matters more in Asia river cruising than almost anywhere else, because monsoons and water levels shape both the weather and the route.

Best Months by River

RiverMost popular monthsWhat to know
Mekong (Vietnam, Cambodia)November–FebruaryHot from March to May; monsoon rains roughly May/June to October; high water peaks around September–October
Yangtze (China)April–May, September–OctoberHot, humid summers; cool, misty winters
Ganges (India)About October–MarchCruising pauses in the hot season and the monsoon
Brahmaputra (India)About October–AprilMonsoon floods in summer; Kaziranga park has its own opening season

These are general patterns, not guarantees; weather and river levels vary from year to year.

High Water and Low Water on the Mekong

The Mekong’s seasonal rise is dramatic. In the monsoon, water backs up into Cambodia’s Tonle Sap, the lake swells, and villages on stilts sit at the water’s edge. In the dry season the river drops, sandbanks appear and the lake shrinks. Lines design their itineraries around these swings, which is why your ship may begin or end its cruise at a different town from the one on a high-water brochure. Timing Questions

What is the best time for a Mekong river cruise?

November to February is cooler and drier and the most popular time. From about March to May it is very hot. The monsoon brings rain from roughly May or June to October, and the river rises to its highest around September and October.

Can low water change a Mekong itinerary?

Yes. Operators describe a long low-water season, roughly from December into August. Lines plan for it — for example by using road transfers to Siem Reap — but itineraries can change at short notice when levels are unusual.

When is the best time for a Yangtze cruise?

Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are the most comfortable. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cool and misty, with fewer visitors.

Festivals Worth Planning Around

  • Lunar New Year (Tet in Vietnam): late January or February; colorful, but some businesses close for several days.
  • Khmer New Year in Cambodia: mid-April, in the hottest part of the year.
  • Diwali in India: October or November; lamps and celebrations across the country.
  • Golden Week in China: early October; domestic travel peaks and sites are crowded.

Festival dates move with lunar calendars, so check the exact days for your year. Your advisor can tell you whether a festival will add to the trip or simply add crowds.
